GR DIGITAL III × STUSSY: Ricoh unveils limited edition point-and-shoot camera

It’s Stussy ’s 30th birthday next year, and for some strange reason the fashion company collaborated with Japanese electronics maker Ricoh to celebrate the occasion in the form of a Stussy-branded digital camera [JP]. Technically, Ricoh didn’t change anything in the GR DIGITAL III the Stussy camera is based on (and which was released in August this year), meaning the new exterior design will most likely attract hardcore Stussy fans or camera collectors only. Spec-wise you still have a 10MP 1/1.7-inch CCD sensor, a 28 mm/F1.9 “GR” lens, 4x digital zoom, ISO sensitivity between 64 and 1,600, a 3-inch LCD display and SD/SDHC/ USB ports. Ricoh replaced the original fonts on the camera with Stussy style fonts and added royal blue as a new color on several buttons and the cap. You can see the camera in its original form below. The Stussy camera will go on sale in Japan in February 2010 (when the fashion brand becomes 30 years old) and will cost $1,100. It’s limited to 500 units only. If you’re interested in getting one, i’d suggest you contact import/export specialists Japan Trend Shop , Geek Stuff 4 U or Rinkya .

Canon Rebel XT survives 3000-foot drop

It wasn’t long ago I posted about the weather-resistant qualities of the 7D . I wonder, though, if you drop an entry-level DSLR and a pro one from half a mile in the air, do they stand an equal chance of surviving? I don’t think anyone is too hot on the idea of testing this question, but one skydiving photographer added a data point unwittingly when his Rebel XT popped off his head at the beginning of a jump. I would have pulled some True Lies-style freefall gymnastics to get it back, but not everybody’s as cool as me and Arnie. Incredibly, the camera didn’t explode into a thousand pieces on landing — in fact, it sustained only minor damage and both the camera and lens are working! Are you kidding me? Looks to me like it landed in a bog, or peat or something. That probably helped. Whatever the case, let’s hear it for this heroic little camera. [via Canon Rumors ]

Thanko rolls out not one but two spy cams

Tokyo-based USB gadget maker today started selling two spy cameras, the so-called Camera Cap [JP] and the LED Spy Light [JP]. While it’s a bit of a stretch to call the latter a spy accessory, the bizarre cap can surely be used for undercover reconnaissance and other shenanigans. As to be expected, both gadgets are kind of silly and powered by USB. The camera cap shoots video with 640×480 resolution and at 25fps. It has 4GB of internal memory (enough to store 50 minutes of video), weighs 130g and has a battery life of 2.5 hours. You can connect it to your Windows machine via USB. It’s available over at Geek Stuff 4U for $134.47 . The LED Spy Light looks more like a conventional flashlight than anything else. It has a small camera that shoots video with 640×480 resolution (at 30fps) and pictures with 1,600

158-lens camera sets new Guinness Record

A camera developed at the Nagoya Institute of Technology has been certified by Guinness World Records to sport the most lenses in the world. The device has no less than 158 lenses. Associate professor Yojiro Ishino and his students built it to capture images of a swaying flame from as many angles as possible. It took the team a total of six months to finish this monster. The lenses are attached in four rows on the body of the device, which is 7.2cm high and 47cm in diameter. Each lens costs $2.10. The camera can also shoot 3D pictures of a flame by using CT technology. It received the Guinness certificate on November 24 already (but was on the news in Japan only today). Via Sankei News [JP]

Cerevo Cam: A digital camera that automatically uploads pics to the web »

Cerevo Cam: A digital camera that automatically uploads pics to the web

An easy to use digital camera that automatically uploads pictures to various websites without using a USB cable, a memory card reader or Eye-Fi? If that’s something you’ve always wanted, the Cerevo Cam, made by Tokyo-based startup Cerevo [JP], might be the right device for you. After months of development work (the camera was completely designed from scratch and in-house), the shoot-and-upload camera is finally available in Japan. To recap, the big idea here is to simplify the process of uploading and sharing pictures online. Cerevo Cam users can send pictures directly from the device to the corresponding photo management site (dubbed Cerevo Life), mail addresses or to a number of web services – even when the camera is turned off (a feature that Eye-Fi doesn’t offer). The so-called “Networked Camera” detects Wi-Fi spots and transfers pictures automatically without you needing to take it out of your bag. You can choose at which time(s) the upload should take place or initiate this yourself from the menu. The auto upload function, probably the most important feature, worked flawlessly during my test (Cerevo gave me a sample for a few days). Alternatively, you can use a 3G modem with it (to be connected through USB).

Joby makes an iPhone app: the Gorillacam

Joby , makers of the various Gorilla accessories — the GorillaPod, the GorillaTorch , GorillaMobile , etc — have just unveiled their first iPhone app: the Gorillacam . The free app provides a number of features to improve the usefulness of the iPhone camera, including a grid for rule-of-thirds shots, making the entire touchscreen a shutter button, burst photo sequences, and much more. Here’s the full press release: Joby Launches Gorillacam, a Free Camera Self-Timer App for iPhone Gorillacam extends the functionality of the iPhone’s camera and, together with Joby’s Gorillamobile iPhone stand, is the perfect solution for hands-free photo taking. SAN FRANCISCO, CA – December 9, 2009 – From the photography experts at Joby, creators of the award-winning Gorillapod line of flexible tripods and the Gorillamobile iPhone stand, comes the Gorillacam, a free, feature-packed camera application for the iPhone. Designed to extend the iPhone’s native camera functionality, the Gorillacam adds many features that are unavailable in the basic camera application, including a self-timer, time-lapse, and continuous rapid-fire shooting. The Gorillacam’s self-timer function allows the user to set a custom time delay, which is ideal for taking group photos or self-portraits. At last iPhone owners can get into their own photographs and become part of the memories. The Gorillacam is the perfect complement to Joby’s popular Gorillamobile for 3G/3GS, an iPhone stand with flexible, wrappable legs that attach to virtually any surface, providing iPhone owners unmatched flexibility for taking photos, recording video, watching movies, or talking hands-free. The Gorillamobile attaches to the iPhone via a custom engineered protective iPhone 3G/3GS case. When used in conjunction with the Gorillacam app, it opens up a world of new possibilities for iPhone owners and encourages “iPhoneography”. In addition to the self-timer, the Gorillacam allows for extremely fast, uninterrupted shots, up to 1.6 frames per second. Photos save automatically in the background allowing users to fire off a sequence of photos. Also built into Gorillacam is a time-lapse feature that can take multiple photos spaced at user-specified intervals as short as 1 second or as long as 2 minutes. Additional capabilities include: • Press anywhere – turns the entire screen into a shutter button. • 3-Shot burst – takes three photographs in rapid succession. Never miss a second of the action. Plus, no more photos ruined when someone blinks! • Grid overlay – compose more interesting shots with a rule of thirds guide. Also great for lining up landscapes or buildings. • Bubble level – take level shots every time. Works in both vertical and horizontal modes, and is ideal for horizons or panoramas. • Share – upload or share photos easily from within the Gorillacam. The Gorillacam is available for free in the iPhone App Store. http://joby.com/gorillacam For additional product or company information, please contact media representative Mark Olson at markolson@maxborgesagency.com.
